Joseph is a born and resident of Okalis village in Soroti district, Eastern Uganda. He is the third born out of eight children, and is the first boy at home.
The father died in 2019 while Joseph was in his P.7 vacation awaiting results to join secondary school. Joseph says he first lost hope since his father who was paying his school fees had died; he thought his studies had come to an end, however God helped him to be courageous and hopeful and later joined Light Academy for his secondary education.
Joseph’s mother deals in sale of second hand clothes and also small scale farming. She uses the little earning to cater for the family needs and also meets a few school needs for her children. Joseph has two siblings Barbra and Jonathan who are also at Light Academy with him but the school dues are so overwhelming to their mother.
During holidays, Joseph goes to construction sites where he works to earn some money for his school requirements. At home they have some land which Joseph and siblings cultivate before going back to school; then the mother plants and weeds, and these children do the harvesting when they come back from school. Unfortunately some seasons don’t yield well due to weather changes and this also challenges them as a family since they sometimes don’t have enough food. Being a boy, very many times Joseph is looked at as the family’s bread winner most especially during holidays.
Joseph says he wants to be a Doctor so as to save people’s lives, fights against bribery and poor service delivery in Uganda’s hospitals.
