DREAM: Electrical Engineer

Jonathan lives with his mother and seven siblings in Okalis village, Soroti district, Eastern Uganda. He is the fourth born out of eight children.

His father died in 2019 which Jonathan says affects his education so much, since the mother strives alone yet it was always combined effort with their late father.

Jonathan’s mother deals in sale of second hand clothes and also carries out small scale farming. She uses the little earning to cater for the family needs and also meets a few school needs for her children. Jonathan has two siblings Barbra and Joseph who are also at Light Academy with him but the school dues are so overwhelming to their mother.

During holidays, Jonathan goes to construction sites with Joseph his brother where they work to earn some money for school requirements. At home they have some land which Jonathan and siblings cultivate before going back to school; then the mother plants and weeds, and these children do the harvesting when they come back from school. Unfortunately some seasons don’t yield well due to weather changes and this also challenges them as a family since they sometimes don’t have enough food.
